INTRODUCTION

The New Gould Medical Dictionary defines "miscarry" as giving birth to a nonviable fetus. Naturally induced miscarriage is the act of using a combination of herbs, vitamins, massage, visualization and prayer to cause the body to miscarry or abort a fetus without mechanical or surgical intervention. The body itself is induced to expel the fetus. It is safe and natural with minimal side effects and minimal negative emotional impact on the woman. It is very inexpensive. It can be done in the privacy of one's home where no one need be involved other then the woman who is pregnant.

From my experience, I believe these methods are safer and less traumatic than surgical abortion. Even if the woman is mistaken about being pregnant these methods will not hurt her if done properly. If she is pregnant and the methods don't work she will know within the first two months or less and she can still elect to have a medical abortion. Natural abortion has a long history. The Greeks and the Romans had many herbal potions that they used for abortion. Many primitive cultures that still survive today have used natural abortion for centuries. Today, because of the availability of early detection pregnancy tests a woman has an increased opportunity of successfully inducing a miscarriage. The new tests detect pregnancy within 24 hours of conception. The earlier these natural abortive methods are used the more likely they will be successful. It is about time we give this information to people and let them decide to use it or not.

This information is not meant to eliminate your medical doctor or other health care provider, but rather to inform him or her of how you, the patient, can be a key player, if not the key player, in obtaining and maintaining your health and well being. Any professional health care provider should be able to see that no harm can come to you from what is offered here and optimally he or she would be your ally in this process and support you through it. If not, we suggest you seek another health practitioner to work with who is more supportive.

Also, this information does not intend to remove your responsibility in preventing pregnancy. Obviously birth control is most important since not getting pregnant is the best way to avoid abortion. But people do get pregnant in spite of their best efforts not to. And we should not have to take on the awesome responsibility of child raising if we are not ready, just because of one impulsive moment of our sexual expression. This is unnecessary and even cruel to the father, mother, and the unwanted child.

WHY DO WE OFFER THIS INFORMATION?

My partner and I had used all types of birth control unsuccessfully. Three surgical abortions had left us ill and angry. Again we found ourselves with an unwanted pregnancy. Neither one of us wanted to endure another surgical abortion. We believed there must be a better way. And there was. We discovered a book by herbalist Susan Weed (see bibliography) which described a safe, natural method to induce a miscarriage. The method requires a lot of faith, some time, effort, and a few dollars for herbs.

The experience of taking control of our lives and sending that fragile, determined life force lovingly on its way, in the privacy, safety, and comfort or our own home, was so empowering and redeeming that it inspired me to write this manual. I offer it to those who also believe that there must be a better way, and to those who believe that nature did not mean for us to suffer powerlessly in our miscalculations, or acts of love. But rather that nature always provides a harmonious way to meet our challenges.

And I offer this information as an alternative to the insanity around the issue of abortion. These methods take the whole affair of abortion out of the political, religious, and medical realm and allow it to be a private issue as it should be. The simple facts presented here should be part of common knowledge. It's amazing and appalling to me that so few people are aware of how to take charge of their own life's choices around having a child. What has brought us to where we can murder people at abortion clinics in the name of God? Why do we dare judge a woman for deciding that it is best for her not to have a child? Why has nature provided so many natural, healthy ways to prevent pregnancy, and to end it naturally, if we choose to do so? Let's stop judging, controlling, and killing each other over such a private matter.

There are other reasons why we offer this information:

  • a) We actually listen to the women: We are collecting stories from women around the world that describe, in her own words, why she has an unwanted pregnancy. To read the pain and anguish in these women is to realise that to deny them reproductive control over their body is to deny them their basic human rights.
  • b) Overpopulation: The world is full. Plain and simple. To simply believe that every baby conceived must be born is to believe in commiting a crime against Mother Nature itself. The most humane way to reduce the human population is simply to have less children. And the best way to start is by simply not having the children who are not wanted by the very women who conceived them.
  • c) An Unwanted child is an Unhappy Child. In his book Freakonomics Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything, 2006, the author Steven D. Levitt draws a connection between the enactment of abortion rights in the United States to falling crime rates two decades later. While some may question his methodology, the fact remains that many of us know of at least one situation where a child has known that they were not wanted and the effect it had on their lives.
  • d) To control a woman's womb is to control sexuality itself. Religious and social conservatives who are "pro-life" are often anti-birth control as well. As with their approach to STDs such as AIDs, conservatives promote the negative consequences as a result of sex. When sex is fun and consequence-free then that goes to the heart of much religious "morality" that stresses only sexual activity for married couples in order to have children. The joy of sexual ecstasy is something that deeply bothers conservatives despite the fact that it can be one of the greatest pleasures known to humans. The World Art Erotica Museum shows that sexual enjoyment is universal despite what our priests and politicians would have us believe.
